Dear Marj and family,
I was extremely saddened to hear of your loss of Alan and my thoughts are with you all at this very sad time. I hold wonderful memories of happy times shared with you both over many years. I hope to join the live stream tomorrow.
Thinking of you all very often.
Love from Pam S.
My memory of Alan goes way back to one day, around 1964, it must have been around lunchtime and Marj and I were walking along Barker Street in front of the north school. I can’t remember where we went for a walk, but I must have been staying at my grandparents, Mary & Stan Milford in Parker Street, possibly on school holidays and this was probably before Marj moved to Laverton to stay with our family for a time…and well before 1967 when they were married….but I digress.
Alan must have been home in Bull Street to have lunch at his mums (Ruby) Ely and was on his way back to work driving his 1960 Ford Zephyr. Alan must have seen us walking past the north school and he drove right across Barker Street and pulled over on the edge of the dirt verge. I recall Marjorie asking me to stay on the footpath whilst she went over and had a chat to Alan through the drivers window for a short time.
I always liked Alans Zephyr’s as they were different to the run of the mill cars of that era.
Moving on through dating Marjorie and ultimately their wedding at the church in Barker Street opposite what was Mahlstedts garage.
As Alan and Marjorie, though my uncle and aunt aren’t that much older than myself, I always enjoyed their company, from the time Alan built their new home in Wimble Street, to the news a few years later of a new chapter in the life of the Ely’s when Alan and Marj announced they were moving to Toowoomba and Alan had secured a position at the Toowoomba foundry due to the limited future prospects at that time of remaining at Thompsons Foundry at Castlemaine.
However Marj and Alan’s new life in Toowoomba and building their new home in Clewley Cres opened up many opportunities for Mary and Stan Milford and sometimes for Ruby Ely to visit and stay in Toowoomba during the colder winter months Victoria.
I was always happy to drive backwards and forwards to take Mary and Stan to Toowoomba around May and we always enjoyed the Carnival of Flowers in the early Spring and that was the time to return to Castlemaine at the end of Winter.
I enjoyed staying with Marj and Alan and by then, Brendon, Kahn and Jody and watched on as Alan created a wonderful home and garden with Marj’s help in Toowoomba.
Christmas 1985 was memorable because we (Rose & Jim Vale) and myself had taken a touring holiday ending up at Marj & Alan’s for Christmas and on that particular year the fog on top of the Great Dividing Range where Toowoomba sits never really lifted all day…which we all thought was quite amusing considering we were in ‘tropical’ Queensland.
Some years later on Alan’s job took him back to Melbourne and the Ely’s moved to Melton as Alan took up his new position at Sunshine.
I miss Alan and I’m glad that Marj has a wonderful extended family to support her though this difficult time.
Rest in Peace Alan, taken way too soon…, you were a good man and a fantastic dad to your boys.
Michael Vale.
Dearest Marj and family,

My darling Marj, Brendon, Kahn & Jody & all your family….
My heart hurt and tears were shed when I found out about Alan’s passing.
I have so many memories of the fun parties, camping trips, bbq dinners and laughs we all had together and the beautiful friendship you had with Mum & Dad in Toowoomba.
These memories are such a huge part of my childhood. 🌺✨♥️
Alan, you were a wonderful man full of spirit, ambition, kindness and huge love for all those around you and you touched the hearts of many.
The universe has bigger plans for you now, and even though you’ve grown your angel wings and you will be missed so much, your soul and spirit will continue to live forever in the hearts of all those blessed to have known you.
To Marj, Brendon, Kahn and Jody, my loving thoughts are with you all in this difficult time.
Hold close to your heart the beautiful memories.
Much love to you all.

Dear Marj & Family
Life brings tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories last forever.
We have wonderful memories of fun times, amazing travels and adventures shared with you and Alan over so many years.
We will never forget his cheerful “Hooley Dooley”.
Our thoughts are with you all at this very sad time.
Love, Jan & Peter Barrett and family.
Dear Marj and family

Our dearest Uncle Alan, how you will be missed.
Marj, Brendon, Kahn and Jody our thoughts and prayers are will you all along with your partners and our dear younger cousins who have lost their wonderful grandfather.
We have many treasured memories of Alan, one of mine was a visit in the campervan which was set up under our carport and plugged into the shed.
It was always a pleasure to spend time together if only briefly and quite a bit of time inbetween.
I now think of all the Ely brothers of that generation back together again and my Father (Neville) having his best mate by his side again. Oh what a reunion it will be.
We certainly were with you in spirit today, Angela, Paul, Anthony and Darren and families.
Dear Marg & family!
So sorry for your loss!
Alan and I stated work at the foundry on the same day and maintained a great friendship during his time at Castlemaine.
We recall the good times we had as families, even the cherry picking outing together.
Gloria and I offer our sincere condolences
Thinking of you at this sad time.
Dear Marj & family,
Thank you for the opportunity to join today’s service from afar given we were unable to attend in person.
We have lots of good memories of the times we all spent together at places like Burrum Heads, Cairns and of course on the Sunshine Coast.
We are thinking of you all at this sad time, Alan was a great friend and will never be forgotten by those who knew him.

Dearest Marj, Kahn, Brendon and Jody,
It was such a huge shock to learn of Alan’s passing. A lot of tears were shed and left a huge void in our hearts. We go back almost 40 years and we often think of the great times we all had, camping, partying, dancing, BBQ’s and dinner parties. Kellie and Adrian playing with your boys and having their own fun. Alan, you were such a caring, loving family man and your family were the world to you. Your sense of humor and your loving nature will be missed so much. You will always be in our thoughts. You may not be here now but nobody can ever take away the wonderful memories we have of you, Marj and the boys. Our love thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. With much love, Fred & Chris.
We have so many wonderful memories of Alan. He always had wonderful stories to tell and gave great hugs. The work he did at the foundry was just so valuable. it is just so hard to believe he is with us no longer. We are thinking of you all at this very difficult time
