The Guildford Hotel (by Ron)
From Castlemaine to Maryborough we’re building a line
Through the ranges and the gorges to the great mineral mine
The long days are dusty, hotter than hell, that’s why we all worship the Guildford Hotel
The Taylor brothers camp at the face of the star
Where there are men for all nations and walks afar
It’s funny to listen to the stories they tell
Each night around the bar at the Guildford Hotel
There’s Steve, Tim and Johnny, they’re all on the go
Serving the booze and collecting the dough
What a stir they would cause if they ever did tell
The secrets they’ve learned at the Guildford Hotel
We curse at the things that go wrong through the day
Vow that we’ll snatch it and move far away
But when the day is done we’re soon feeling well
As the laughter rings out at the Guildford Hotel
On the night after pay day there’s fun and romance
It’s a night for the family to sing and to dance
You can let your hair down, come out of your shell
And do you own thing at the Guildford hotel
If you listen to the cook when the night’s getting late
She says that her cooking is the best in the state
The food is good, the service as well
It’s three cheers for Janet at the Guildford Hotel
If you think you can drink, we’ve got money to back
On stayers like Mark and store keeper Jack
And they tell me that Herman gives everyone hell
When he gets on the booze at the Guildford Hotel
When the job is finished, I’ll be on my way
Travelling up north where the sun shines each day
But whenever I wonder my memories will dwell
On those happy days at the Guildford Hotel
