in memory of

Peter Alan Legge

Peter Alan Legge

Peter passed away peacefully on 23rd March 2022 after a long battle with cancer aged 73.

The beloved father and husband is survived by his wife, Rachel; children, Patrick, William and Isabel;

and granddaughters, Siena and Isla.

Peter, the son of Alan and Emmy Legge, was born at the John Faulkner Hospital in Coburg on 11th January 1949.

He attended Melbourne University, where he studied English and Geography as part of his teaching degree.

Peter went on to have a long and distinguished career in secondary education, working at Castlemaine, Kyneton and Eaglehawk high schools.

In the twilight of his teaching career, Peter—along with his business partner, Jim Wright—established Wordswork Publications, a highly successful English grammar homework program.

Peter loved travelling the world, and took every opportunity he could to visit France to improve his French.

But more than anything, Peter loved spending time with friends and family. He cared deeply for his family, and provided a wonderful upbringing for them in Castlemaine, and never-ending support once the kids had flown the coop.

And despite being a Collingwood supporter, he was never one-eyed, loved learning about the world we live in,

and still had all his own teeth to the end.

A funeral service will be held for Peter on Wednesday 6th April in the Chapel of Mount Alexander Funerals,

12 Campbell Street, Castlemaine.  Following this service you are warmly invited to join the family

for refreshments in the Tearooms at the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens.

If you wish to join us at the service via livestream,

please return to the home page of this website and click on the livestream button.

The service will be live approximately 5-10 minutes prior to commencing.

A private cremation will be held for Peter.

I knew Peter a little as his parents were very good family friends having met while working and living in Glenroy. Peter and his brother Rod were the background to our growing up in our early teens and the Legge family have remained in my memory for many decades. I am saddened for your loss.

  2. Leslie Thornton says:

Peter was a patron of the Theatre Royal.

I have very fond memories of our friendship especially while teaching at Kyneton Secondary College.
I will miss his quick wit and big heart for those less fortunate than himself. I’ll miss his humour and good times.
My condolences to Rachel and the family.
    Love from Rod Bricknell

  6. Rupert Steiner says:

I’ve known Peter and his family for a long time and our legendary squash group saw many people and friends come and go, including his son’s William and Pat, but he and John Fay where the last to give up a young man’s game.
The many meals enjoyed after such stiff competitions almost always followed by a tiramisu, if avaliable, are a memory to behold. We all miss you a lot Peter and our squash nights will never be the same. Sincerest condolences to the whole family.
    Rupert Steiner

Peter was a long-time member of our Friday French conversation group.

  12. Geoff Hannon says:

    Farewell to a good man.
For decades there was a congenial welcome first at Bull Street then at the top of the hill in Lyttleton Street.

  13. Jackie McLean says:

Deepest sympathy to all Peter’s family. Fond memories of Mr Legge teaching me at Castlemaine.

  14. Christine Kilmartin says:

Peter and Rachel were special people to have in the neighbourhood. Peter’s distinctive hat always showed above my fenceline, propped up by those gazelle-like, striding legs and a cheery welcome. A stop for a quick chat never seemed like a bother to Peter, although if I had known more of his obsession for correct English and punctuation, my Qld education would have kicked in and prolonged his stay for quite a while. It is a neighbourhood missing something special in their leaving but I am thankful to have had the rich experience.
    Christine Kilmartin.

  15. Polly and Barrie Woods says:

Peter knew how to live life well. He and Rachel held the best parties under the shady trees in Lyttleton St, and such good dinners with lots of fun and conversation.
But as well as that, Peter was a true friend, and knew exactly how to offer help when it was needed. I will always be grateful that he taught me how to drive.
He was a great teacher, and our daughters Emma and Dinah remember him with deep affection.
Our love to Rachel , Paddy , William and Isabel.
    Farewell Peter.
    Polly and Barrie Woods
