Alas, Joan and I never met, but we knew each other well in mind and spirit.
What an inspiration she was to all who cared about preventing and fighting fires.
I’ll never forget her.
What a woman, Jani! You lived a magnificent life of spirit and courage, sparkling intelligence and a deep feeling for justice and equity.
Thank you for everything you offered and contributed.
With love and appreciation,
Devika Karen Bedford
I was sad to learn of the passing of my friend Joan. My condolences to Joan’s daughters Katherine, Claire, and their families.
Joan’s ability to gather and compile information regarding fire survival was amazing.
A legacy she has left for many with the publishing of her Fire Survival Books.
A wonderful and talented woman who will be sadly missed.
R.I.P our dear friend Joan.
John Peacock. Alan Marks and the late Chips Fearon. CFA Selby.
What a beautiful service for a woman who managed to fit so much into her life.
As has already been said, her legacy lives on.
Sending all of my love to Katherine, Claire, Annie and Maya.

Dear Joan, my mother’s Cousin [Joan] herself a twin. It was wonderful being with you in Castlemaine just over three weeks ago.
Today was a beautiful service that enabled me to know you more. It was a service that educated me about your early life and demonstrated how you stood up for what you believed in, helped many by your Bush Fires Book, and most of all not afraid to be YOU.
My mother Joan would have enjoyed and valued being closer to her Eastern States Cousin.
My condolences to Kathrine, Maya, Claire and Annie and her many friends.

Joan’s lifetime of work in bushfire awareness and preparedness has saved hundreds of lives – our family’s survival on Black Saturday can largely be attributed to the information and education we received from studying Joan’s publications.

My beloved father Donald Edward Hosking was Joan’s Cousin! They were fabulous friends and had regular contact over the years, theirs was a great affection,
love and respect for each other!
